Doctors React To Markiplier’s Health Emergency

Markiplier is an enormously popular HRworldr, gamer, comedian, and frequent resident of hospitals. Mark has suffered a couple of bowel obstructions over the years, and just a couple of weeks ago had to go into the hospital for a few nights. I invited my friend Dr. Austin Chiang, a Gastroenterologist, or doctor who specializes in intestinal issues, to join me today and give us some more insight into what Mark was experiencing and to educate us on NG Tubes, bowel movements, and so much more. We’re glad you’re feeling better, Mark! Congrats on your poop.

  • Blockages aren't fun. I had a bunch of scar tissue from a previous duodenal and unfortunately I got another ulcer further up that perforated. So blood built up. I couldn't eat anything because I always felt full. I got very weak and pale. A friend came to visit and told me I looked really pale that I hadn't noticed as much because to me it was more gradual. I started expelling liquid that was black which was de-oxygenated blood. I called my friend and went straight through triage. Apparently I wasn't far off organ failure because I wasn't receiving enough oxygenated blood to my organs. I ended up having multiple transfusions over a period of weeks as well as iron infusions and scopes to open up the area that had been scarred over so everything could move through as it's supposed to. It's not a pleasant experience.

  • I have Crohn's disease and have had multiple bowel obstructions, ileuses and have had ileostomies. I have a J-pouch, which is a pouch made of small intestine. My large intestine is completely removed when I was 17. Also, the contrast they sometime use for MRIs is like 3 liters of awful tasting stuff that you have to chug, one every 20 minutes or so.

  • In the Netherlands the only place to go after 5pm is a special doctor's office next to the hospital (a sub ER or something?) and my GP's office is unwilling to help unless it's urgent due to corona and the lockdown... One GP thinks I may have asthma because I've been coughing up mucus and having trouble breathing at times (have had salbutamol for that since I was little) for 2+ months but he asked me to not come in during the lockdown cause it isn't urgent enough but he does want to listen to my lungs 😒

  • This was very interesting for me. I've wanted my specialty to be Gastroenterology for some time now. Reasons being I've also had stomach problems it's been going on for around 5 years now, I've been to multiple specialist but none of them know what I have. I do have Gastritis but the doctor said it's not big enough to be causing me so much pain. Up to this day my parents are taking my to specialist asking them to please help me because no one can find out what's wrong with me. I want to be a Gastroenterologist because I personally know how it feels to live with so much pain and I could relate to my patients but at the same time try to find out what's wrong with them and help them.

  • I wish the UK had primary care doctors like you guys. Over here it is chaotic. It literally takes 1-2 weeks to get an appointment. Then you see a different doctor every time you go. If you're going for a follow up appointment, you have to explain the whole issue over again. I've even had a second doctor not agree with the previous doctors diagnosis and change/cancel meds. Its just crazy.

  • I had food poisoning back in 2009 and it was horrible. I was alternating between puking and 💩. I would be on the toilet going to the bathroom then would puke right after or puke then 💩. It was literally every 15 to 20 mins for a few hours. My mother was like you think we should go to the hospital and I was like no because I knew I would not make it without having to throw up or go to the bathroom. I survived, but prob should have gone to the hospital that night.

  • This one hits home. First person. I was in the hospital twice for an SBO. Luckily I didn't need surgery but an NG tube is no fun. Second time I knew what I was in for and had a pretty good panic attack. Funny story; the second time I was hospitalized my NG tube came out, inadequate bandaging, but thankfully a Gastro came in and heard some good sounds out of the abdominal region and said to hold off on tubing me again. But if you feel like you have someone turning a rusty wrench on your lower innards seek help. The pain isn't always constant, you can feel fine for a bit and think it has passed only for it to come back half an hour later.

  • So what about people who don't poop commonly? I usually poop maybe once or twice a week. I am prone to cramming and occasionally stabbing pain. I notice I tend to go more frequently around my period, with coffee (as long as my body doesn't get too use to it), and of course laxatives (I try to avoid them). I did have one time I didn't poop for over a month, that was terrible because I was bloated and ironically felt like I had to pee all the time. My doctors never seem to think it's a serious issue and that it maybe due to my scoliosis. Though, my sister who has severe scoliosis and is on pain medication, tends to poop more than me (still only once to twice times a week, but more comes out). Yes, me and my sister talk about this because we are very proud when we poop. What is considered normal for pooping?

  • About a year and a half ago, I had to get my appendix removed. The issue is that, and I'm sure others know how this is like, I have a super high pain tolerance. I walked the entire day, never vomited, never felt like I had to hunch over. So, yeah, I figured I was fine. The only reason why I was concerned was because the night before, the pain was on the left side of my torso, and by morning, it was in my bottom right. (I still figured it was probably bad gas). I would not have gone in if it wasn't for my husband. I was getting ready for work and he stayed home from his job, because he felt like he should. He made me call in sick and we spent the entire day figuring out that my appendix was five times bigger than it should be, with a mucus plug and two stool stones. I DID cry, but not because of pain. We had to go to two separate hospitals, and by the time we were walking from the parking lot to the 2nd one, I had been poked with a needle FIFTEEN times (because for each needle, it didn't work on one arm, so they had to move to the other, EVERY, SINGLE, TIME). And I broke down because I was in pain, my arms were bruised, I finally felt sick... because of all the poking, and I just wanted to go to sleep. Whew... still though. Even after the surgery, I only took meds to prevent the swelling. I felt hardly any pain besides right after I stood up. JUST ASK THE DOCTOR. Don't wait.

The bowel obstruction almost killed me, and honestly I never thought I'd be so happy about having diarrhea and a healthy bowel system after many weeks in the hospital. So to agree with you, if you have not pooped in a few days or you have severe stomach pain, call your doctor

  • I Have gastroparesis, short gut, and EoE...I’ve had most of my stomach removed in an attempt to help emptying that made things worse: I’m dependent on my g/j tube and a central line. I switch between tube feeds and IV nutrition (tpn). My GI doc calls me his unicorn patient because I have three GI illnesses that don’t tend to happen together and it becomes impossible to treat one without making the other worse. It is a tough life living with these issues, but I have a nine year old with autism who depends on me, so I have to keep fighting!
