Doctor Mike and Mortician React To “Six Feet Under”

Caitlin Doughty is the creator behind the HRworld channel “Ask A Mortician” where she normalizes death and educates her audience about what happens after… well… you know. Being the brilliant mortician she is, I thought it would make a lot of sense for us to not react to a medical drama, but a death drama, so we watched HBO’s Six Feet Under. Despite my years of medical training and experience, there isn’t a lot I know about what happens to the human body after it dies, so Caitlin enlightened me to things such as what happens to prosthetics, the smells of a mortuary, and what happens to your various orifices.

  • I hope that Clarity isn't too busy when I die. My husband and kids know to call there when it's time. Even if they don't want to spend time with my body, I want Caitlin's business to be in charge of whatever they decide to do with me. No chemicals, no ridiculously expensive casket. Feed me back to the earth. Thank you Dr Mike, for having Caitlin on the show, as well as answering her questions. I agree with the comment that said you all are on a spectrum, it's caring for people, from birth to death, both living and dead. You are appreciated!

  • I did not know the formalin used in anatomy labs was more potent! I worked with the stuff for 2 1/2 years and always thought that embalming fluid had a higher concentration than the 5% that I was used to and it was buffered in mostly methyl alcohol and another alcohol I can't remember the name of. God that stuff smelled like rubbing alcohol, acetone, and slightly pungent (think sulfer). Just cleaning a tablespoon sized spill makes your nose and eyes burn.

  • I used to hang out in the cadaver lab with resident friends all the time in the middle of the night. Right down the hall from where they kept the animals in the medical research lab. Never bothered me 🤷‍♀️ also, back when I first started as a CNA while in nursing school, when someone died on our unit, we'd stuff the orifices with cotton before taking the body down to the freezer/morgue area. That's actually how I met my husband, I needed help rolling a heavier body over so I could finish getting them ready to take down to the freezer, and they sent him in. Our eyes locked and it was love at first site. Over the body. In room 501. #nightshift

  • Some time in the early 90's I was driving on I-5 near Tacoma, WA, when a man in a small truck was driving very erratically in the lane next to me. He quickly hit a larger pickup truck and flipped over. I was about 3 cars behind and traffic had yet to slow down. We instantly came upon the severed head of the erratic driver sitting upright and resting on his neck. His eyes were open and his face appeared flushed. There was no blood! All we could do was keep driving. Later the story of the man dying and the stolen truck was in the local paper. Of course there was no mention of the decapitation. I still see his face whenever I retell the accident. Everything happened in a few seconds! He never knew what hit him; instant death. I hope to never witness anything like this ever again!!! RIP crazy driver.

  • I've only ever seen my dad's body and it frightened me. I was twenty. But seeing him look so clearly dead when I expected him to move, breathe and speak was uncanny. So there was grief, fear and guilt about being afraid of someone who loved me. But it did help me come to terms with the fact he was gone. To be clear, he'd been refridgerated for a week or more so you know, he looked dead. There wasn't much makeup or work done, we didn't want him to look alive because to me that would be harder.

    KaiseaKaiseaPrije 12 dana
  • I’m a CNA and my grandpa just recently Passed on sept 4th. It is certainly way different seeing someone you don’t know or barley know pass and do post Mortem care vs a family or friend. But I was grateful to be able to care for him before and after his passing before the funeral home took him.

    MistellGamingMistellGamingPrije 12 dana
  • When my husband died, I was allowed to see him almost straight away, and he looked exactly the same, just paler. It looked like he was sleeping, and I swear it even looked to me like he was breathing. He was room temperature, not cold, but not his usual warmth. The next day he looked exactly the same, but he was extremely cold. They had moved him to a refrigerated part of the hospital. I was surprised he didn't look any different from the day before. I expected something to be different. After that I wasn't allowed to see him again and he was cremated after a week. I'm glad I got to spend some time with his body. If he had died of covid, I wouldn't have had the luxury. He wasn't the first person I saw dead (his mom had passed seven years earlier) but my entire life had been planned around his continued existence and I'm not done dealing with his abrupt removal from the rest of my life. He enjoyed both of you guys' channels. I remember seeing him watch this video back when it first came out and I'm glad I finally got around to watching it too.

  • But why be embalmed at all? 6 Ft Under did an episode about NATURAL BURIAL - where the body is given, unwrapped, no coffin, into the ground, back to the earth it came from. That is how i want to go. All this funeral direction is because people really hold out hope that someday their body will be resurrected- called back to Jesus, whatever. Its a way of denying death. I can't imagine my phemeldahyded self locked in a box underground for the rest of eternity. That is way worse than being just plain dead and buried, the end

Like it was as though the body was his shell, a painting of him. But he, or whatever made him "him," was no longer there. Such a powerful experience for sure.

  • What Caitlin was saying about people going through most of life without being confronted by death until a corspe is on your hands really struck home for me. My dog recently had to be put down and while I knew that it was the right thing to do for her, I was holding her head for the vet when they administered the injection and I felt her go entirely limp in a matter of seconds. I don't know how to describe it there's just something I really struggled to process about her body after she was gone.
